SKAGIT VALLEY FOOD COOPERATIVE GENERAL MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
The General Manager is responsible for overseeing the overall operation of the Grocery Store, C-Square and the Third Street Cafe to ensure maximum sales and profitability through merchandising, customer service, inventory management, expense control, personnel management and controlled operating costs; all while thriving in a competitive marketplace and adhering to the Co-op's stated values.
The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for:
COOPERATIVE OWNERSHIP
* Coordinate with the board president to ensure that the board upholds their governance responsibilities.
* Provide monthly reports to demonstrate compliance with board policies.
* Respond in a timely way to board requests and directives, and keep the board apprised of any issues that may put the cooperative at risk.
* Provide information to the board and regularly attend board meetings, retreats, and member linkage events.
FINANCIAL AND PLANNING
* Develop and recommend to the board of directors long- and short-range plans to achieve Co-op purposes.
* Prepare operating and capital budgets for approval by the board and be held accountable for control of resources.
* Direct all financial operations of the cooperative.
* Investigate new business opportunities and make recommendations to the board of directors on expansion, relocation and acquisitions; conduct negotiations as agreed.
* Participate in regional and national Co-op and industry events.
OPERATIONS
* Ensure a profitable, growing business that acts as an economic engine to further the Co-op's community initiatives.
* Maintain knowledge of natural foods, prepared foods, restaurant, retail and industry trends.
* Maintain appropriate relations with wholesale distributors, local markets, and other industry sources.
* Ensure the establishment and maintenance of a product mix that meets shopper needs.
* Plan and execute a margin strategy designed to be price competitive and maintain adequate profit for growth.
* Ensure compliance with all applicable laws regarding licenses, permits, health regulations, employment, etc.
HUMAN RESOURCES
* Oversee compliance with the cooperative's personnel policies and update as needed.
* Hire, supervise and evaluate management staff, including taking disciplinary action as needed.
* Develop a staff organizational structure that promotes fair distribution of work while maintaining maximum service to customers.
* Prepare a yearly payroll budget that meets operating budget constraints.
* Ensure a safe, healthy workplace for employees.
* Ensure adequate training of staff. Establish and maintain systems that encourage teamwork and support a healthy organizational culture.
MARKETING AND OUTREACH
* Ensure that the Co-op has an advertising and marketing strategy to increase public awareness of the cooperative's products and services.
* Ensure that information about the business is communicated to members through newsletter, social media and an annual report.
* Ensure strong relationships with community partners to further Co-op values and goals.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
-At least 5 years of experience leading a large, complex organization
-Ethical retail food management experience with oversight of multiple functions (i.e. HR, Finance, Marketing, IT, Prepared Foods, Operations)
-Demonstrated strong strategic planning and financial analytical skills
-Excellent oral and written communication skills
-Ability to work collaboratively with a Board of Directors
-Clear commitment to the mission of providing a more socially just, healthy, and environmentally sustainable food system
-Strong leadership and personnel management skills
-A collaborative personal style that works in partnership with others, including members, staff, suppliers and other external partners
-Strong and inspirational communication skills to articulate a clear vision for the Co-op
-Demonstrated broad knowledge of and commitment to principles of cooperative organizational structure
- Cultural competency essential; ability to speak Spanish a plus
- Restaurant management experience a plus
