Position Purpose & Summary

The will play a central role in building and advancing Cargills Animal Welfare Strategy across Cargills Protein and Animal Nutrition & Health Businesses. This includes working closely with the Sustainability Hub and Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health and Protein & Salt Sustainability Director to build an integrated strategy and approach to animal welfare and sustainability. He/she will serve as a key convener across Cargills protein businesses to bring together embedded sustainability and animal welfare practitioners to refine and advance Cargills overarching animal welfare strategy, policies and operational standards. Additionally, he/she will build a community of practice among embedded multi-species animal welfare leads and veterinarians in the three Protein Groups and Animal Nutrition & Health to align and share learnings.

The Sustainable Animal Welfare Director will be the face of Cargill on animal welfare topics to our global protein customers, the media, governments and non-governmental organization (NGO) stakeholders. In this capacity, he/she will build and execute a model to engage customers around animal welfare in our global protein supply chains. Additionally, he/she will support Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health on animal welfare driven innovations and value chain engagement. He/she will build relationships with animal welfare related NGOs and researchers to understand and anticipate emerging animal welfare trends and best practices. In partnership with Cargill Corporate Communications, he/she will help Cargill develop and advance external positioning related to animal health and welfare

The successful candidate will thrive in establishing a strategy for Animal Welfare, working effectively across internal and external networks to deliver on initiatives and leveraging the geographic footprint and scale of Cargill to affect meaningful change.

Principal Accountabilities

40% - Strategy & Strategic Planning

  • Lead the development and execution of Cargills multi-species Sustainable Animal Welfare Strategy across Cargills Protein and Animal Nutrition & Health Businesses.
  • Lead a matrixed team of sustainability and multi-species animal welfare practitioners to refine and advance Cargills overarching animal welfare strategy, policies and operational standards.
  • Build a community of practice among animal welfare leads and vets embedded in the three Protein Groups and Animal Nutrition & Health to align and share learnings.
  • Educate Cargills protein businesses on risks and opportunities related to Animal Welfare
  • Lead key projects to advance animal welfare outcomes within Cargills protein supply chains

  • 50% - External Engagement

  • Lead external engagement on multi-species animal welfare topics with our global protein customers, the media, governments and non-governmental organization (NGO) stakeholders.
  • Build and execute a customer engagement model focused on driving strategic customer relations though addressing multi-species animal welfare.
  • Support Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health on animal welfare driven innovations and value chain engagement.
  • Build relationships with animal welfare related NGOs and researchers to understand and anticipate emerging animal welfare trends and best practices.
  • In partnership with Cargill Corporate Communications, develop and advance external positioning related to animal health and welfare

  • 10% - Thought Leadership & Advocacy

  • Collaborate with Corporate Communications and Government Relations resources to drive thought leadership and advocacy work that reinforces the Sustainable Animal welfare strategy overall and specific initiatives as needed.
  • Collaborate with corporate account leaders to better understands customer needs and strategy and how the Sustainable Animal welfare strategy overall reinforces this

  • Qualifications

    Minimum Required Qualifications

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or PhD in Animal Sciences
  • 8+ years working as a large animal Veterinarian or on animal welfare issues
  • Demonstrated experience in strategy creation
  • Experience working with NGOs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate at all levels within the organization
  • Outstanding stakeholder management skills
  • Strategic thinking/problem solving
  • Facilitation skills for workshops and meetings
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, active inquiry skills
  • Flexible working style to adapt to evolving program demands
  • Ability to lead through influence, drive action and maintain focused and consistent effort needed to drive change
  • Relationship builder at all levels and cross-function/enterprise
  • Ability to use data to make strategic decisions

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in multi-stakeholder groups
  • A proven track record of experience working on animal welfare issues with multiple species
  • Experience leading Animal welfare in a commercial setting
  • Experience working on animal housing issues
  • Experience working with/at an Animal processing facility
  • A proven track record of developing pragmatic, scalable solutions to animal welfare challenges in a plant setting
  • Experience working directly with Livestock farmers / producers
